Extreme Adventures Northern California
Published in Digital by Hunter Publishing ()
Author: Olsen
Average review score:

Great alternative activities in the Golden State
Reading this book, along with my other guide book to California, I discovered far more interesting things to do in "Extreme Adventures" during my visit to California. The "Extreme" doesn't always apply -- there are mellow hikes, bike rides, raft trips, etc. -- but if you're looking for some fun off the beaten trail, this is it! I liked Brad Olsen's other books "World Stompers" and "Sacred Places" too. He writes (and illustrates) in a way that I think I'm hanging out with the guy!

Eyewitnessed to the Indian Wars, 1865-1891: The Struggle for Apacheria (Eyewitnesses to the Indian Wars)
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (April, 2001)
Author: Peter Cozzens
Average review score:

A Landmark in the Literature of the American West
This marvelous book can safely be said to be the last word on the Apache Wars. The breadth and scope of the original accounts presented here - most drawn from obscure 19th Century sources - is remarkable. There are newspaper interviews with General George Crook, an account of the Chiricahua Apaches in captivity by Walter Reed (for whom Walter Reed Hospital is named), a visit with Cochise in his mountain stronghold by the teritorial governor of Arizona, and many, many more "you are there" accounts. Cozzens opens the work with an excellent historical overview of the Apache Wars. Indispensable to the Indian Wars affecionado!

Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (March, 1997)
Author: Richard Drinnon
Average review score:

A work of incredible historical significance.
"To all appearances," wrote Richard Drinnon, "it all began innocently enough with a first victim" (Indian-Hating 35). Indeed, in Drinnon's 'Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building,'those first victims finally have the chance to tell their story through the records of their conquerors. From John Endicott's war on the Niantics and Pequots, to the horrors of the My Lai massacre, Drinnon illustrates, with passion, power and unrelenting wit, how Indian-hating in the Americas became a national pastime, and how that same hate was turned against the native populations of the Phillipines and Southeast Asia. A tremendous feat of scholarship that should not be missed.

Faith Traditions and the Family (Family, Religion, and Culture)
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (September, 1996)
Authors: Phyllis D. Airhart and Margaret Lamberts Bendroth
Average review score:

Religious denominations negotiating family and modernity
This book is an extremely engaging and informative collection of essays by a number of religious scholars chronicling the attempts of various North American religious denominations to negotiate the impact of modernity on the family. These denominational histories reveal periods of growth and decline in the denominations themselves and in their attention to family issues. They also show the range of voices within the various denominations. These stories thus debunk the "culture wars" typology, according to which denominations are labeled as univocally liberal or conservative.

The two major forces that appear across these denominational accounts are the tension between individualism and community and the influence of market forces on family life. The stories show how these broad social forces, more than any one social movement have produced many changes in families. Feminism is usually cited as one of the forces that has impacted the modern family, and it has spurred action and/or inspired reaction in virtually every denomination. Likewise, the recent focus on fatherhood in a number of denominations demonstrates the continuing importance of social and cultural change on churches and families. The most powerful insights from these various denominational narratives are the need to negotiate with, rather than reject modernity, and the important point that the mere presence of conflict on issues like the family does not necessarily indicate failure.

Whether the conflict is over tradition and innovation, individualism and familism, public and private, ideals and reality, or protective withdrawal from or prophetic engagement with the surrounding culture, the essays in this volume show how the family has been an important locus of the reconciliation of religion and modernity in American culture.

Familiar Butterflies of North America
The size makes it very convenient for use while observing. Species pictures on the left hand pages in the upper left corner are most useful when the pages are fanned for quick identification. Information on that particular member of the species is excellent.

Perfect for kids!
My 8-year-old son was so fascinated by this book. It has the animals' pictures and their information on facing pages, so you don't have to flip back and forth between pictures/information as with many field guides. My son read this book until it fell apart, and I ended up buying him several others in the series.

Name that Shell!
Perfect photos -- plus ample description with range and habitat -- for identification of the rare gorgeous specimen, the common little beauties that practically jump into my basket, and previous collections as well. Adding to this tiny guide's usefulness are basic information on mollusks, shell groupings and parts, hints on collecting, a glossary, and an index. It is my newest travel companion, perfect for my purposes, compact and light enough to take everywhere (along with my rock, bird, and tree guides!).
